Hey there :3
I'm a bit late on making this thread, but I wanted to have some stuff to show off first. After the first couple of days that consisted mostly of building a bunch of farms and getting my basic requirements dealt with (storage system, villager trading setup, gear etc) I started thinking about what my base should become. I had chosen a location in the northeastern part of the map, in a large snow and ice biome. So necessarily, this was going to be a "snow and ice" themed build.
I also wanted to build something huge, some ice castle of sorts, perhaps.
First step was that I decided to have a huge ice wall either around my base or part of my base. Eager to build something, I started building a huge ice farm next to my iron farm to gather resources. This is a design by gnembon, a brilliant afk-able, nearly redstoneless farm that I built up in around 2 days. I added a small snow farm as well, seen in the center of the front face of the ice farm.
Resource gathering had begun.

Next, I started brainstorming ideas/designs for my ice wall in flat creative:

Choosing a design somewhere between the one on the left and the middle for the ice wall, I got to work. Three days later, the wall was complete:

(disclaimer: Amaris' message is unrelated, yet fitting)
I did a lot of brainstorming and googling around for inspiration on what can look cool and found that the general theme of builds I liked was large main halls surrounded by various towers. I started sketching up some bases... and then noticed they all looked a bit like the Mandelbrot fractal:
So, being a mathematician, I could not help but to give up making something prettier than mathematics itself and went on to design a mandelbrot-inspired base. Additionally, I like the wordplay with a line from the (admittedly pretty obnoxious) song "Let it go" from Disneys Frozen:
For the walls, I decided to go for ice covering snow, which, in my opinion, gives a gorgeous look, reminiscent of a large ice crystal. I had tried dozens of other options, but nothing else looked nearly as nice in my opinion. While the colour contrast with the ice wall is somewhat reduced, this is significantly offset by the wildly different textures and that the blue/packed ice of the ice wall is significantly darker than the light blue walls of the base.

The next step followed today: I decided to build up the frontal circle as a big circular tower with a slanted ceiling, inspired by broken off ice crystals. In creative testing, placing well-lit things underneath, for example plants or any other kind of contrasting interior looks amazing, so that will be my plan for the top of the tower in the future.

And that's the current state of my base.
So... whats next? As you can see, the base is largely floating in the air right now, so raising the terrain to match the base will be necessary soon. there will be a snow path along the wall on the second level as well, similar to the ledge below. Then, I need to decide what to do with the main hall, which is currently my biggest variable. Do I leave it open? Do I fit a huge roof on top? I have not decided yet. Additionally, a number of small towers need to be built around the base, which will feature a contrasting build style, while still fitting the overall style of the base. Liklik suggested I think up a story about what the base is and who built it. I came up with the following:
So yeah. I have my work cut out for me
If you have any ideas, feedback or inspiration, please let me know :3

A quick WorldEdit script in a local testing world later, I had a schematic to build the fractal in our survival world. The biggest difficulty was that the fractal, by nature, has a lot of fine structures that get lost in the discrete Minecraft world, so making it look nice and round was quite the challenge. My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
The Mandelbrot fractal was discovered in the late 1970s by Benoit Mandelbrot. It is the set or points in the complex plane for which the recurrence relation
remains bounded for n tending to ∞. It is surprisingly easily computed, this being the script I used to generate mine:
I then transferred it into a schematic using the Litematica mod:

Note how messy that is.

Code:
//generate -c minecraft:ice cx=x/60.0-0.5;cy=z/60.0;xn=cx;yn=cy;for(n=0;n<100;n++){txn=xn*xn-yn*yn+cx;yn=2*xn*yn+cy;xn=txn}xn*xn+yn*yn<100&&y==0

The ice crystal was generated by a yet unknown natural phenomenon, but researchers assume the origin of this is in a unique interaction between the freezing temperatures with outgassing from the nether, to which a direct connection exists below.
It being in such a remote and cold location, aforementioned experts consist of mostly a lone professor that has recently made this place his home, which over the centuries has been home to a multitude of inhabitants; hermits, on the lookout for a unique and nearly magical place to live. Dwarves, expecting riches inside and underneath the gigantic ice crystal, hollowing it out in its entirety. A group of witches that built a number of towers on top of some of the smaller stalactites. All were eventually expelled by creatures from the nether intruding into the base via the portal far below the surface. The professor was the first to be able to discover the secret of the magical seal installed in ancient times, closing off the portal for the first time in centuries, installing a huge contraption to open it back up whenever he feels like it.
So yeah. I have my work cut out for me
